BOPS DONATES FOOD TO THE RED CROSS
The brothers and sisters within BOPS were very blessed this year at the chili cookoff and many food items were left over after this years event. They decided to share these blessings with those in need rather than saving them for next year. BOPS donated these items to the Hanover area Red Cross. They are hoping they can do this at least once a year if not more in the days, months and years to come.

BOPS HEADLINE THE EVENING SUN IN CHILI PREVIEW
Chili chefs ready to go / The Hanover Chili Cookoff kicks off today at 11 a.m.
By ALISON MILLER /The Evening Sun

The wind was blowing hard, but that didn't stop diehard chili cookers from setting up their tents early Saturday afternoon - in prime real estate territory, of course - in preparation for the 15th annual Hanover Chili Cookoff today.

The members of BOPS Hazardous Chili - a three-time "People's Choice" winner - were one of the early birds hard at work on their booth early Saturday morning. The group plans to don their cowboy hats and decorate their tent with a barn-type flare in recognition of the TV series, "The Dukes of Hazzard."

The chili group, which consists of 20 or so members from the Hanover-Adams County area, are all longtime friends. They see the chili cookoff as kind of a reunion for everyone.

"We come to have fun, and as a result we help raise money for charities," says Dan Arter, of Hanover, the head cook of BOPS. As for any desire to take home a trophy and a little prize money, Arter says that's "just icing on the cake."

The 15th annual Hanover Chili Cookoff welcomes all chili lovers - whether you're a cook looking to show off your prized recipe or you just like the taste of it. The event will kick off at 11 a.m. today on the softball fields at the Good Field Complex in Hanover.

As of Saturday, about 50 competitors were registered, with one competitor coming from as far away as Texas, said Ron Bean, a committee member of the Hanover Chili Cookoff. Also, with Giant's Keystone Regional Chili Cookoff taking place Saturday in Harrisburg, he expects some of those competitors to make the drive and attend Hanover's cookoff, too, which could mean even more people vying for top chili honors.

"These people that are really into chili, they'll come from anywhere," Bean said.
Chili cooks can choose to compete in any, or all, of the competition categories, which include red chili, chili verde, open chili and salsa competitions.

This year the event will be sanctioned by the International Chili Society (ICS), unlike year's prior where it had been sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International (C.A.S.I).

Bean says he is excited about the new change.

"We feel that it's a better match for us and we like the direction it is going," he said.
Under the International Chili Society, cooks will receive prize money - ranging from $50 to $500- plus the chance to compete in the World Champion Chili Cookoff held in Charleston, W. Va. in October, where the winner receives a check for $25,000.
There are some drawbacks to the new format. The entry fee for the open chili competition will remain at $25, but in order to enter in any of the competitions, cooks must first become an ICS member, which costs $50 per year.

Proceeds from the event will go to local charities, including the Hanover Adams Rehabilitation & Training (H.A.R.T.) Center and the Guthrie Memorial Library - Hanover's Public Library. Bean says he is hoping to raise $50,000 or more for these charities.

"We have been around that mark the last couple years and the community has been very supportive," Bean said.

Other activities at the event include live music from Kelly Bell Band, 6 Cents and Flat Top, in addition to a face painting station, raffles, a jalapeno eating contest, and appearances by Watson the Magician, Randini the Remarkable Juggler and Skeeta the Clown. (READ ENTIRE STORY)

BOPS TURKEY BOWL - LITTLESTOWN BEATS DELONE 37-33
Saturday afternoon, BOPS rounded up some players and hit up the Delone Catholic Football practice field for a nice Cold game of 2 hand touch. This annual event drew 8 players, 4 from Delone, 3 from Littlestown and 1 from South Western. So with that said a good old Littlestown VS Delone match was set. It was gridlocked the entire way, but when the time clock stuck 2:30 the Littlestown Team were 4 points ahead of the Delone team and the game was over. The next game will be on Super Bowl Sunday, but there were talks about trying to have a match or two till then. Stay tuned!

BOPS SUPPORT OF HANOVER CHILI COOKOFF COMES TO AN END...AT LEAST FOR NOW
Every Labor Day weekend for the last four years, BOPS grabbed items from gardens all over Hanover and surrounding areas to create their 3-time award winning Hazzardous Chili for the largest chili contest on the East Coast. By far the greatest event held all year long, it took a lot of work and creative thought to prepare for, but once the day arrived it was always worth while. Friends and family would come from miles away to support the team and to support the cause which was to raise money for many local charities. By the 4th year, so many people were coming that it started to resemble a reunion ... no invitation needed. Everyone just knew where to be and when. BOPS goal every year was to make a lot of delicious chili, to raise money and to have a good time with friends. By days end, if all went well, a trophy was simply icing on the cake. An icing BOPS has gotten pretty familiar wit,h bringing home 9 trophies in 4 years with 3 of them being 1ST PLACE FOR PEOPLES CHOICE (2005, 2006, 2007). This year our BOPS OF HAZZARD goals were no different, but a few major issues got in the way. After the 2007 event, the Hanover Chili Cook Off had undergone extensive PA LCB scrutiny. A complaint was filed about some alleged activities and after a three-month investigation, the only problem to be found was with the beer license and how it was secured. For the previous 11 years, this was not an issue. (Read Evening Sun stories below to explain more) In the end, many people are now going to suffer due to one persons displeasure with this event. New rules were applied to this years event to make sure that there are no troubles with the LCB or any other government bodies. One of the biggest hits for the BOPS chili team is that all items previously used to raise money for the charitable organizations are no longer allowed – chili dogs, corn bread, sweet tea, and kids jell-o cups and stickers. If teams are no longer allowed to give items away for donations then what is the point of the event? Granted it’s a chili cook off, but you can’t raise substantial funds for the charities on chili alone. BOPS would rather write out a check for the amount of money that we would spend to make 25 gallons of chili and donate it directly to one of the charities, then to walk home with a 4" trophy and no money to offer those in need. So, due to these fustrations, BOPS will skip this years’ cook off. We will instead gather privately, make chili for our own crowd and a wait to see the success of this years’ Hanover Chili Cook off. Hopefully, if the powers that be see fit, changes will again be considered and we’ll see you all back in 2009.
